Exercise – Free Writing

Freewriting is an excellent way to move past ‘writer’s block’ and get past any blocks you have when you’re blogging. It works because it:

Lets you work through ideas you aren’t sure about yet

Allows you to write without worrying about being perfect or writing well

Generates new ideas you didn’t even know you had

Increases your flow of words so writing comes more easily

Step 1: Pick a topic to write about

Choose a topic you want to blog about but feel unsure of or blocked in writing about. If you can’t think of a topic, just choose your blog niche.

Step 2: Set a timer for 5, 10 or 15 minutes

Set a clock timer for 5, 10 or 15 minutes. Start with 5 minutes and build up to 15 minutes once you’ve gotten the hang of freewriting.

Step 3: Write and don’t stop

Don’t stop writing until the timer stops. Write the words as they come to you without editing. Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, or punctuation.

Simple write down whatever is in your head on the page. If you can’t think of what to say, write “I don’t know what to say.”

Step 4: Read over your writing

Once the timer stops, read over your writing to see if any new ideas or insights have come to you. Is there anything you can salvage here for your blog?
