Posted on July 25, 2020Edit “Dyslexia is a Gift!”
Dyslexia is a Gift!Much of what we hear about dyslexia could influence our thoughts to focus on the negatives. These aspects are concrete and they do exist, but people with dyslexia demonstrate many strengths. Don’t let existing dyslexic difficulties overshadow the strengths you or your child has.
Among the News, the Diagnosis of Dyslexia, Emotions and … The Wall
Already. You just found out that you have dyslexia, or that your little piece of heaven has been diagnosed with dyslexia. You probably feel that your expectations and dreams for your child will not be able to materialize. The frustration for some of us is twofold, especially when even having observed how intelligent our little creature is, they give us the news that it has difficulties that seem to us of an unexpected nature. Please continue reading to explain when I talk about some of the strengths that accompany dyslexia.
I want to start by explaining dyslexia from a strength point of view.
I understand that once we identify strengths it helps us to know how to help the boy in a more effective way. Obviously, it is essential to analyze the specific weaknesses of some individual with Dyslexia and there is no doubt or question. In my practice as a dyslexia therapist, I try to work with weaknesses with either alphabet-related skills, speaking, letter-sound correspondence, reading words in isolation, writing words without separating, difficulties with written expression, problems with directionality, among others through therapy to attack these weaknesses with multisensory education.
Strengths of People with Dyslexia
The Brain’s Ability to Compensate for Difficulties – People with dyslexia can listen to a book and retain so much of the text’s message and many details that, conversely, many readers rely on reading visually.
Good Comprehension of Texts Read by Others – Contrary to what this may seem to some teachers who focus on fluency in reading, it comes as no surprise to some parents who have always read to their children and watch like children. / a interacts with the book read.
Macro Thinking – People with dyslexia tend to understand more comprehensive concepts rather than specific details.
Three-Dimensional Perception – Related to reading difficulties, however, strengthens visual understanding of models (For example, curiosity about models that you might see in the dentist’s office or collect objects from nature such as leaves and rocks ).
People with dyslexia excel in certain domains – Successful people with dyslexia excel in science, art, sports, and even venture into other domains confronting difficulties such as creative writing. Personally, I have met people with dyslexia in many different trades.Apparently, it is more than necessary to understand the strengths that many children have and can be overshadowed by the evident deficits presented by the learning difficulty called Dyslexia.
ImageDefining Dyslexia
Since we have treated Dyslexia from the point of view of strengths, let’s talk about definitions with their focus on difficulties (which we admit are real and described by many studies) and thus understand difficulties with language, reading and the writing.
