Robbie West resides in Germany and is an author of fantasy books for children, short stories, poetry, songs, and her personal favorite – flash fiction which she has published in the Potato Soup Journal. She is also a songwriter/composer and recorded a song with her choir, We Are One, to support Mali-Hilfe, an organization sponsoring projects in the villages of Mali. Recently, she has developed one of her fictional characters, Drucilla B. Queen to host her own blog in which she not only introduces new books to her audience but interviews some of their characters as well.

Wow! This lady is fantastic. She will never have difficulty making a living because she can speak. I was in tears three or four times because she described so poignantly my own feelings about writing and creativity. In neuroscience, researchers have studied brain functions in people who are having a creative moment. (Unfortunately, I cannot remember where I read it.) Most people think that creativity is produced by the brain, which would meant some areas of the brain are firing more intensely than others. This not the case. The brain does not become more active when it is creating, parts of the brain shut down, particularly in the right frontal lobe if I remember correctly. So the brain does not produce something creative, it releases it.

I started a facebook group called from culture to culture. It is intended to increase each member’s of understanding of various subcultures in America, such as African American culture, Mexican-American culture, gay culture and working class white culture. I made it private to allow the members to be completely open and honest with each other.

To monetize my blog Drucilla’s Corner, I am planning to make some videos for children of Drucilla B. Queen’s Story Hour. I, dressed as a bee, will read aloud from a story and then comment on the message therein and encourage the children to send me their reaction in the form of drawings, poems, an essay, their own short story or simply a letter to me. The best ones will be presented in the next story hour. When I have a decent following, I could have a sponsor, do guest blogs and interviews and do some affiliated marketing of educational products for children, i.e. games, books, programs to aid in reading better. The idea is to promote reading and writing in children of all ages. I am also hoping that the blog will help me get my own books published and marketed.

I would say that in general I had a good week. In the technical area, I got my pages and posts worked out in the navigation menu, I sent out a kind of newsletter, a bulletin really and people on my mailing list got it. I contacted all fifty people and more on my mailing list to explain what was coming and to correct some e-mail addresses that had fallen out of use. I like the Bulletin in Canva but somehow it didn’t get saved. So from now on, I am doing all the writing in Word, then cutting and pasting. In the content area, I made leaps and bounds. It seems to have all come together in the last two days. Aside from my website, I have come up with an idea for a weekly reading hour for children. It is geared toward ages 8 to 14, because they will be encouraged to read and write on their own and may participate in monthly contests based on the stories I will have read to them. And the magnet? I will be dressed as Drucilla. I am having a costume made so I will be dressed up as the queen bee. Some will love it, some will think it’s stupid and still others will laugh themselves sick. But few will forget about it. Possibilities for earning money with it might come as a guest on other shows, selling my books, getting sponsors. And the point of the whole thing is to get kids more interested in reading by showing them all that is out there in books and urging them to write their own creative ideas.

There were a few difficulties during the week as well. We are working at such a turbo-speed that if you don’t understand something, especially something crucial, you cannot finish the assignments and moved ahead. I am having trouble with linking and with Canva. I am not always able to save things in it. I am still having difficulties linking my graphics there to my website and I am not finding the templates I need. Today I tried to make a logo. The program wouldn’t let me alter anything in the template. I really need someone who will answer my questions. Every time I ask for help, I am referred to the lesson that covered this concept. That is not wrong in itself, but I have already been through these lessons three or four times and my screen does not look exactly like the screen in the lesson. If I could talk to someone on the phone, my questions would be answer in five minutes and I would know what I was doing again. Now I am four lessons behind because I cannot get a particular thing to work. Then all my frustration with computers come back up to the surface. Oh well, I will probably feel rather proud of myself when I get it all figured out.

This week, I am going to get my facebook and twitter profiles cleaned up. I had also started up an instagram account a couple of years ago. But I am not very good with pictures, so I did not keep up with it for very long. Now I have something that I can use these media for. How long are we going to have access to the lessons after the 30 days are up? I need to go through everything SLOWLY. I will also focus more comments and replies this week and get some friends to do some practice runs with me. Wow! I’m exhausted just thinking about it, but in a good sort of way.

HONEY & BEESWAX: a Blog Is Born

    Tickle Your Funny Bone

Drucilla B. Queen and her faithful Advisor, Dalton, kick off Drucilla’s new career as a fiction reporter in Drucilla’s Corner. In her interviews and reports, she lets the characters speak for themselves and shows us a side of them we have never seen before. What better way is there to hear about new than by meeting a character or two from them. So join us in Drucilla’s Corner, where entertainment is in the spotlight.

    Creative Book Review Contest

Drucilla and Dalton love to read book reviews about their favorite books and new books they might like to read. For that reason, they are hosting the first annual Creative Book Review Contest. Write to them about your favorite book and make it as entertaining as the book itself. Vist Drucilla’s Corner for the details. The winning book review will appear in the July issue of Honey & Beeswax.

Hi, my name is Julie Ann Christiansen. I am a clinical linguist and author of children’s books, who seeks to promote reading and creative writing among children from six to sixteen years old. I joined this facebook group to get in touch with more readers and writers, so I can talk with them about their tastes, ambitions, momentary troubles. Occasionally, I also hope to get some good feedback on writing questions of blocks that I may be having.

My blog is all about one of my fictional characters, Drucilla B. Queen, and how she brings characters from other books to life and gives them a voice of their own. She also critiques (eventually) current middle grade fiction on the market. I see the blog as an opportunity: 1) to help get my own middle grade fiction published, 2) to meet middle grade fiction authors, editors and publishers and get them interested in my characters, 3) host writing contests to increase my mailing list, 4) stay up-to-date on current literature. An income may be generated by the publication and sales of my novels (I have six manuscripts complete and am working on number seven). In addition, I plan is to truly bring Drucilla B. Queen to life to host her own reading hour for children on YouTube. I will be dressed as Drucilla in a bee costume – I already have someone who can make it. As Drucilla, I will read a story or a part of one and comment on it. There will be different topics to focus on such as anti-bullying, divorce of parents, feeling different, feeling lonely, antiracism, etc. The children will be invited in different sessions to draw me a picture related to the story they had just heard, or to write me a poem or a story. The best piece will be presented in the next session and the child will be sent a certificate in honor of their good work. Money could be generate by: 1) having sponsors, 2) doing guest appearances on other blogs and shows. 3. Setting up after-schools courses with Drucilla to teach children about other things like spelling and grammar, making them come to life instead teaching them so dry and dull. So some of the kids may learn something, but whatever it is, it should be great fun!
